About Matchbox Road Museum
It Started With One Car
I was a kid who liked Matchbox cars, and I never grew out of it.
I kept buying them. Then I started chasing the hard ones, the old models, the ones they stopped making, the ones nobody else had. That went on for years and years. What started as a shoebox under my bed turned into one of the largest Matchbox collections anywhere, and it’s all still together in one building.
What's Inside
Walk in and it’s aisle after aisle of glass cases, floor to ceiling. Whole walls of cars still sealed on their original cards.
It isn’t only cars either. I’ve got trucks, buses, fire engines, airliners, playsets and plenty of oddities most people never knew Matchbox made, the NBC news van, police cars built for real departments, Swissair and Pan Am planes, dolls, playhouses and tin toys.
There are also pieces almost nobody has seen: preproduction models and playsets that were made up as samples but never sold in shops.
People who have been coming here for thirty years still spot something new every time.
Preserving History, Expanding the Collection
Preserving the Collection & Growing the Archive
Our mission is to preserve and expand a unique archive of miniature automotive history.
We are actively seeking collections that can contribute to this vision. In addition to accepting donations, we also purchase carefully selected collections that align with the museum’s goal of building a meaningful and lasting archive of the brand.
Whether through acquisition or contribution, each collection helps us protect and share this heritage with future generations.
Still Buying, Still Adding to the Collection
I’m Always Looking for More
Every year, Matchbox cars get harder to find. Boxes get thrown out. Collections get split up and sold off piece by piece. Once that happens, they’re gone.
So I’m still buying. I take donations too, and I purchase collections when they’re the right fit for the museum. Tell me what you’ve got and I’ll give you a straight answer, what it is, what it’s worth to me, and whether it belongs here.
Either way, your cars end up where people can actually see them instead of sitting in a box in somebody’s attic.

The online shop isn’t finished yet, but everything I have available right now is listed on eBay.
Looking for something specific that isn’t listed? Email me at mbroad@aol.com and tell me exactly what you’re after. Collections come through here all the time, so I may well have it, or be able to find it.

For collectors
If you collect, you already know what matters: condition, authenticity and rarity.
That’s how I buy, and that’s how I sell. Everything I list is described the way it actually is — the wheels, the base, the box, the flaws and all. No guessing and no polishing.
Some people are here for an investment piece. Some are here for the car they had when they were eight. Both are fine by me.

The Joy of Nostalgia – How Tiny Cars Create Big Memories
For many adults, seeing a tiny Matchbox car instantly brings back childhood memories.
The History of Matchbox
The Legacy of Matchbox Cars
Matchbox started in 1953, and it changed what a toy car could be.
To learn more about the brand’s origins and evolution, explore our detailed guide to the history of Matchbox cars.
The idea was simple. Take a real vehicle, shrink it down, get the details right, and make it small enough to fit in a matchbox, so any kid could afford one. A delivery lorry, a fire engine, a sports car you’d only ever seen in a magazine, sitting in the palm of your hand.
Millions of us grew up pushing them around the floor. Seventy years later they’re not just toys anymore. They’re a record of how cars looked, how they were built, and what people dreamed about owning.
That’s what I’ve spent my life keeping hold of, and that’s what you’ll see here.

Visitor Voice
I first went to the museum 30 years ago, I have returned many times. Every time I went I would notice more and more things.
As a volunteer now I have seen the museum grow. Last year I took part in updating the cars. We put 1000 new cars in the display, we physically moved every car in what I like to call the yellow brick road. During this I noticed cars I had not before. If you think this is just about cars, it's not. Matchbox also produced dolls, playhouses, tin toys and much more. If you ever have a chance to go to the museum you get to see so many childhood memories.

Help Me Keep the Doors Open
I’ve spent a lifetime putting this collection together. Keeping it open to the public is a different job entirely.
Donations pay for the practical side, display cases, repairs, cataloguing, and picking up collections that would otherwise be split up and lost. None of it is glamorous. All of it is necessary.
Give what you can. It goes straight back into the cases.
For Collectors and Enthusiasts
You know the one you’re still missing.
You know which wheels are wrong on that reissue.
You’ve paid too much for a box and never regretted it.
Then we’ll get along fine.
I’ve been buying, sorting and chasing these cars for decades, and I’d rather talk to somebody who knows what they’re looking at than sell to somebody who doesn’t. Come in with your want list. Ask about a casting, a colour, a year. You’ll get a real answer, not a shrug.
